Teaching for Understanding: Annotation
Close Reading: Annotation October: Teaching for Understanding
What is annotation? Is it highlight? Is it writing summaries in the margin? Annotation is a big part of deconstructing a text and using those pieces to create a larger puzzle of meaning. Many teachers need guidance on how to get students to be independent learners and annotate on their own. In this module you will learn effective ways on how to get annotation started in your classroom.
Agenda:
Watch Video: Annotation of the Witch
Read: Beyond the Yellow Highlighter: Teaching Annotation Skills to Improve Reading Comprehension Handout that should be used to follow along with “Witch” annotation video.
Reflection: What are some key ideas in “Beyond the Yellow Highlighter”? How is annotation helpful to students reading comprehension? Write a reflection (12 point font, double spaced) on how you would implement close reading and annotation into your classroom. What texts would you use? What guided questions would you use? How would you use the handout with in your classroom?
