Intro to Special Education

Welcome to the wonderful world of acronyms.  Special Education is increasingly a part of a new educators experience.  This first module is designed to introduce them to the the ideas of Special Education and the terminology.  The next session will introduce the IEP's. 

It is recommended that you watch the video with your mentee as well after you watch it and discuss some of the theories discussed.

Agenda:

1.) Watch the following video- What is special education?

2.) Read over the definition of Special Education from the Government's website: What is Special education?

Summarize what Special education and why we have it.

3.) The basic special education process: Read over this flowchart.


Reflection:

After viewing and reading over the resources please write up a one-page reflection (12 point font, double spaced) and submit it below.  The reflection should deal with the following questions:

  • Summarize what special education is and why we have it?
  • What issues do you think will be hardest for a new educator to deal with in regards to Special Educaiton
